Poems that run through the Hebrew alphabet, each verse or group of verses beginning with the next of its twenty-two letters.
An alphabet poem, or acrostic, is a discipline and a promise of completeness: the poet says everything, from aleph to tav. Psalm 119 gives each letter eight verses, 176 in all; Lamentations gives each one verse, or three in chapter 3, and then in chapter 5 keeps the twenty-two verses but lets the alphabet go. The poem of the capable wife closes Proverbs the same way. The small irregularities are part of the record: chapters 2 to 4 of Lamentations put pe before ayin, Psalm 145 has no verse for nun, and Psalms 25 and 34 both skip a letter and end on an extra pe. English cannot carry any of it, which is why these poems are easy to read without knowing they are built this way.

Read from the first Hebrew word of each verse, after the psalm headings, in the site’s Hebrew text; the alphabet runs right to left. In Psalm 25 the ב is the second word of verse 2. Psalms 111 and 112 are alphabet poems too, but by half-lines, which verse numbers cannot show; so is part of Nahum 1.
Not a word scripture uses. A form, not a word the text uses. The poems are found by their first letters in Hebrew; "acrostic" is a later Greek name for them.
