The first month, in spring — the month of the Exodus, and of Passover.
Nisan is the first month of the religious year, and it holds that place by decree: God tells Moses in Egypt that this month is to be the beginning of months. Its older name is Abib, which means the month when the barley is in the ear — the harvest that fixes the calendar. Passover falls on the fourteenth of it, and everything else in the spring cycle follows.
