Seven days living in shelters of branches, to remember forty years of not having a house.
The last of the three pilgrimage feasts and the most festive: seven days from the fifteenth of Tishri, kept in temporary shelters built of branches, so that a settled people would spend a week a year in something that was not a house. It celebrates the ingathering at the end of the agricultural year, and remembers the wilderness. An eighth day of assembly follows it. It is the feast John has in mind when Jesus stands up on the last and greatest day and offers water.
