Sabbath

Hebrew שַׁבָּת. Literally "a ceasing". Also called Shabbat, The seventh day.

The seventh day, from sunset to sunset — rest commanded for everyone, including the servants and the animals.

The Sabbath runs sunset to sunset, which is why the gospels are careful about burying a body before evening. The command is grounded twice and differently: Exodus roots it in creation, Deuteronomy in having been slaves who could not stop. Its reach is the striking part — the rest is commanded not just for the household but for the servant, the resident foreigner and the ox, which makes it the earliest labour law in the text.

Sabbath
Work laid aside at sunset, for the household, the servants and the animals alike (Exodus 20:10).
